The Martha Brae River:

Located in the parish of Trelawny, there are several stories as to the origin of this rivers name. The river, according to folklore, was named after an Arawak Indian woman named Martha Brae. This woman was a Taino witch who possessed mystical powers. Sadly, to reveal the location of hidden gold along the river, Martha was said to have been tortured by Spanish settlers. Other versions include being named after the Martha Brae village and that it’s from the Spanish name for the river Rio Mateberion.

The Bamboo Raft Ride:

Carefully crafted by each captain themselves we stepped onto captain Chev’s raft with care. An incredible 30ft in length the rafts are actually quite sturdy. My friend Teresa & I however, took extra caution as we sat none the less! Each raft has a two person seat located at it’s rear where guests then sit to enjoy their peaceful ride. We enjoyed learning about Chev and his family as he gently glided us along the tranquil waters. Chev’s connection to the Martha Brae and the surrounding community added an extra layer of authenticity and depth to the experience!

Spectacular Scenery:

Enjoying the scenery of each new turn, we spotted colourful birds and other wildlife amongst the foliage of the shores! A quiet cacophony of natures highlights surrounded us as we floated down the river. Tropical trees lined the riverbanks, which created a welcomed shade as their branches reached over us with their lush canopy. I enjoyed seeing the little “float through” raft shops that ambitious entrepreneurs had set up along the rivers’ edge. Book your raft ride here!

Navigating the Raft:

At your captains discretion, adventurous souls may opt to try navigating the rafts themselves! This option intrigued me so I decided to try this surprisingly difficult task. A fun opportunity, I have a new appreciation for Chev’s seemingly effortless skills as a bamboo raft captain thanks to my attempts!

Souvenirs & River Refreshments:

Each captain offers their own unique twist for the Martha Brae bamboo raft experience. Some captains offer refreshments during their rides and others sell items they craft or create. Chev shared both refreshments and his coconut carvings – handmade with care! Mud massages, given by your captain, are yet another unique option available during your Martha Brae River journey! (Paid for in advance).
